Asda Stores
Asda Stores Ltd headquartered in Leeds, West Yorkshire, is the second-largest supermarket chain in Britain with over 600 stores country wide, 339 of which are superstores.
The Building
This property portfolio is wide ranging from older city centre brick and tile properties to new glass and aluminium retail centres, many of which are on out-of-town sites.
The Requirements
City Facilities had the UK wide contact to look after all of Asda’s property portfolio, a role that required them to maintain all the roof-based plant. They had identified numerous safety and access issues on a number of sites throughout the UK and needed a contractor that could carry out risk assessments for each site, produce detailed access strategy documents, then design supply and install all necessary equipment identified from this. The contactor would be required to operate in a self-sufficient manner providing all access equipment and craneage and carry out all works during out of hours shop closures.
The Solution
Eurosafe Solutions carried out a full site survey to all of the sites requested, identified and areas of concern, then produced access strategy advice and full detailed drawings of these requirements. Due to the stores all being live, all the new equipment had to be installed without any penetration of the roof. This was achieved by using Big Foot plant support feet on all stair and step units. Collective protection, in the form of counterbalanced freestanding guardrail, was installed to all areas where immediate access was required. D-Mark demarcation systems were used in access routes and areas where less frequent access was needed. This combination created green, amber and red access zones that could be accessed with varying levels of training and PPE.
